MARLBOROUGH, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Sept. 15, 2006--Cytyc Corporation (Nasdaq: CYTC), a leading provider of surgical and diagnostic products targeting cancer diagnostics and women's health, today announced that it received the 2006 Insight Award for Customer Advocacy in Healthcare Communications for its new website, http://aboutheavyperiods.com. Cytyc was selected among 47 nominees to receive the award for providing valuable information to consumers, enabling informed healthcare choices. The award was presented earlier this week at the 2nd Annual Healthcare Communications Forum in Boston, Massachusetts.
Cytyc was recognized for creating http://aboutheavyperiods.com, an online resource that clearly explains the signs, symptoms, and available treatment options for menorrhagia, or excessive menstrual bleeding; a condition that afflicts approximately seven million women in the United States. Cytyc enlisted an advisory board of physicians to review and edit the website's content to ensure accuracy. The site also includes a patient self-assessment quiz and a link to find a local physician who has special interest in treating heavy periods. "Aboutheavyperiods.com is filled with educational content communicated in plain language that makes it easy for consumers to learn about the condition and treatment options," said Professor Deborah Bosley, director of the Center for Writing, Language, and Literacy at the University of North Carolina - Charlotte and one of three judges for the 2006 Insight Award for Customer Advocacy in Healthcare Communications. "I'd like to see more of these easy-to-understand health communication materials throughout the healthcare industry because they create increased awareness and understanding among consumers about important healthcare issues."
"Cytyc is dedicated to educating women about menorrhagia and empowering them with the knowledge to seek treatment for this debilitating condition," said Ellen Sheets, M.D., senior vice president and chief medical officer at Cytyc Corporation and Advisory Board Member of http://aboutheavyperiods.com. "We thank Art Plus Technology for recognizing our work to educate women about menorrhagia and look forward to updating the site with additional resources that will continue to help women make informed decisions about their health."
